Rice University sophomore Arsalan Kazemi scored 14 points and grabbed four rebounds as his Iranian national team continued Group B pool play Wednesday with an 88-51 loss to Team USA.
Against a United States team featuring NBA players, Kazemi was 5-for-8 from the field. He also had a game-high five steals in the contest televised on ESPN.
Kazemi’s play was highlighted by a layup in which he was fouled while driving into the lane midway through the third quarter as well as a fourth-quarter dunk. With just under seven minutes to play in the game, Iranian point guard Saman Veisi broke free for a long pass and then found Kazemi trailing for the 2-on-1 dunk.
In four games of play at the 2010 FIBA World Championship being held in Turkey, Kazemi is averaging 11.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and shooting 47.2 percent from the field. He has 11 steals at the tournament.
Iran, 1-3 at the 2010 FIBA World Championship, concludes pool play Thursday against Slovenia.
